Dressing for Winter in the Desert

Happy New Year! It’s officially 2020 and I love having a brand new start to a year filled with endless possibilities. There’s always tons of encouraging and inspirational quotes that flood my newsfeed and Pinterest homepage around this time of year. You maybe have seen the phrase “New Year, Same Me” floating around on the internet. This rings true for me, specifically when it comes to the cold weather—I’m still a wimp! And when I say “cold” weather, I’m talking 50 degrees, which is certainly not cold by anyone’s standards who lives anywhere except for Phoenix, Palm Springs and Death Valley. Growing up in Phoenix, I’ve realized that I really do enjoy the warm weather. I don’t like being cold, and truthfully, don’t enjoy dressing for the winter weather. The one thing that makes it more enjoyable is when I get to incorporate my favorite color into my outfit, and let’s be real, when do I ever not wear pink of some sort?!

Last February Freddy and I took a weekend trip up to Denver and got to play in the snow, which was so fun! Even though I don’t care for the cold weather, the snow is magical and makes the weather way more enjoyable. Before we left for our trip, I wanted to get this pink beanie from J. Crew to keep my ears warm, but my local store was sold out. We were walking through the Cherry Creek mall in Denver on one of the days to warm up a bit and get out of the snow storm, and I found the last pink beanie in their store! I was so happy and it’s been my favorite thing to wear whenever I’m cold. I even wear it around our apartment sometimes! A beanie is such an easy winter accessory to pair with any outfit, and the saying is true: when your head is warm, your body is warm. They updated the style this year so that each color has a neutral pom-pom, which I think is so cute! I also want to get one in the ivory color as a neutral to pair with everything.

I’ve had this Eddie Bauer puffer vest for almost 10 years now and it’s carried me through some pretty cold days throughout that time. It’s the most versatile winter layering piece that I own—I wear it over sweaters, under jackets, really with anything! My Dad took me Black Friday shopping in San Diego when I was in college, which was very surprising considering he’s the kind of guy who’s worn the same clothes for 20+ years and thinks they’re brand new—he hates shopping. We went into the Eddie Bauer store because he was looking for some hiking clothes, and as soon as I spotted this puffer vest I fell in love with it! I love wearing it and it reminds me of the fun memories I had with my Dad on that Black Friday all those years ago :)
