The Home Diaries: Staying Organized

Even though Spring hasn’t fully arrived yet (although it feels like it has with these warm temps!) I’ve taken on a “Spring cleaning” mindset over the last month. It’s been so freeing to get organized and donate/throw away unwanted or old items that we don’t use anymore. It’s like starting the year off on a clean slate and I couldn’t be happier about it. I’ve been following the 'A Bowl Full of Lemons' Home Organization Challenge with one of my friends and we’ve been updating each other on our progress. If you’re looking to get organized this year, then I highly recommend following along!

Each week you tackle a new room in your home and go through an entire de-cluttering process by deciding what to keep, toss and donate into different bins. I started with our pantry and I was amazed by how much food we had in there that I didn’t even know was there! I was able to get rid of items that were expired and consolidate some of our dry foods like rice and pasta. Taking everything out and starting from scratch gave me a better sense of organization for our pantry shelves and where things should be placed, rather than just keeping things there because that’s where they’ve always been. Now when I go grocery shopping I’m more aware of what we actually need and where to store items. I’ve been using these clear storage containers for our dry goods and it makes it so much easier to visibly see how much we have left of something so that I can add it to my grocery list!

By mid April, the goal is to have touched every single room in your house and continue the year clean and clutter free! Now I know this is a very high expectation and one I probably won’t keep! But this year I want to be more mindful of the things we buy for our home and ask myself if this is something we really need, or if it will just take up space in a closet somewhere and not get put to good use. Plus, I also want to try and stay on top of cleanliness and keep our space organized on a daily basis. I won’t lie and tell you that I’ve never let dirty dishes sit in the sink for 3 days without touching them...but I want to make a conscious effort each day to do smaller clean-ups at night rather than spend an entire day off doing a cleaning overhaul :)

I hope this post inspires you in some way to tackle an organization project you may have been putting off. I know I was until I started this challenge, and now it’s something I look forward to each week and how I can help make our home more efficient and organized for us to enjoy!
